Make Yourself at Home

What kind of house do you live in?
Was it crafted from wood from a far away place
Do you proudly tell it’s story to your guests
Or was it toiled over
By hands of men whose story you’ve never heard
What kind of house do you live in?
Did you choose the layout
With your partner over evening wine
A cheap bottle you could afford
Gazing into halls that aren’t there yet
Wondering if the children you imagine look the same as the one they’re imagining
What kind of house do you live in?
Do the walls soak in music and bathe in light
Do the curtains serve their purpose, or do they let the birds see inside
How many tvs, how many dishes
Do you live alone, is this house you wished this
What kind of home do you live in?
Do you let people see passed the door
Are there miracles walking around in there
Or have they been hiding from you
While you try to survive
(Can I help you look for them?)
What kind of house do you live in?
Do you have a summertime
Of Mexican blankets in your front yard
Inviting your friends to sit for a minute
So you can talk about your hearts

One morning I’ll knock on your door and ask you this
What kind of house do you live in?
And you’ll say your name- It’ll sound like a music to your ears
The kind that booms & makes the neighbors look out their window
And you’ll feel it in your bones
That this is the kind of home you live in

-make yourself at home-

I hope this can be a considered a poem, even if it’s a messy one at that.¬†Featuring photos from Scotland & Ireland!
